MACC is not against the police, says advisory board
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not against the police, but against corruption, said the commission's advisory board.
“The Advisory Board wishes to make it clear that the MACC operations being carried out are against all forms of corruption in society as a whole, and it is wrong for anyone to suggest that the police service is being specially targeted.
“The fight is against corruption in government, business and politics,” said the board's chairperson Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim in a media statement.
On the same note, he added that for every corrupt policeman of whatever rank or designation, there are thousands of the men and women in blue who carry out their thankless, and often dangerous, duties cheerfully, in strict observance of their oath of service in the public interest.
The MACC recently acted against police in Malacca, for allegedly running a protection racket covering illegal gambling dens and massage parlours in the state.
Two Malacca district police chiefs from Jasin and Melaka Tengah, the Alor Gajah district criminal investigation chief, as well seven other police officers were nabbed by the graftbusters in the operation.
All are currently out on bail.
"The overwhelming majority in the police service are outraged by the actions of their corrupt brother officers and are ashamed of belonging to a service whose reputation has been irreversibly damaged by the corrupt few.
"To those of them who remain steadfast in rejecting corruption, we owe a debt of gratitude," Tunku Aziz said.
