Held over misuse of funds for flood victims
KOTA BARU: A 52-year-old man has been detained over allegations of misappropriation of RM330,000 in a scheme to repair the homes of flood victims in Tanah Merah.
Kelantan Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission director Datuk Abd Aziz Aban said at least 50 individuals including a Datuk would be summoned to help in the investigations.
He said RM880,000 had been allocated to repair 411 houses for flood victims in the district but only RM550,000 had been utilised.
“We are investigating all aspects of the case and in the course, six contractors and nine sub contractors only used RM550,000 while the rest was given to a third party.
“We also detained a man who received kickbacks of up to RM50,000 from the missing amount,” he told reporters after handing over his post to his successor Datuk Mohd Samsudin Yusuf here yesterday.
Abd Aziz would take over Mohd Samsudin’s previous post as Wilayah Persekutuan MACC director.
He said a report was lodged on the suspected corrupt practices by some of the flood victims who felt something amiss after their rebuilt houses did not reflect the amount allocated.
“We started the investigation on Feb 14 and the latest suspect was arrested on March 4 and there would be more arrests to be made.
“We are in the final stages of the investigations and we had also frozen an account with RM225,000 and seized RM100,000 in cash.”
Meanwhile in Putrajaya, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam is leaving it to the authorities to investigate alleged abuse of a welfare fund for chronic patients and the poor by several individuals.
He said Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had informed him yesterday of the arrest of several individuals related to the abuse of the fund amounting to over RM20mil.
“The ministry has certain criteria on how to use the money raised through the special fund.
“But if the people trusted have been abusing it, it is up to the relevant parties to investigate,” he told reporters after handing over Tamil literature books for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination to school representatives here today.
It was reported that four people, including a woman with the title of “Datuk”, were arrested by the MACC over the alleged abuse of fund.
