MACC: Only weird if AG didn’t send back SRC, RM2.6b papers
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 ― The Attorney-General's move to return investigation papers on SRC International Bhd and the RM2.6 billion deposited in the prime minister's accounts to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not extraordinary, Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said today.
Commenting on the “confusion” in the public perception that the move was noteworthy, the MACC chief commissioner explained that investigation papers are regularly sent back for clarifications.
“Actually it is normal to return back investigation papers, if it is not returned back then it is unusual,” he said when being interviewed over MACC's live radio broadcast, MACC.fm.
Abu Kassim said that his investigators must now review matters pertaining to the case and will proceed to resubmit the papers back to the AGC once it is completed.
AG Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said on Monday that he was returning the investigation papers submitted on December 31 by MACC as he needed further information on their recommendations and proposals before he could decide on the appropriate course of action.
The commission had investigated SRC International over a RM4 billion bond obtained from Retirement Fund Incorporated (KWAP).
The MACC also submitted one investigation paper regarding the RM2.6 billion to the prosecutor after speaking to the donors and domestic witnesses, adding that it was still seeking evidence and documents from several financial institutions abroad.
It also denied a news report by UK-based website Sarawak Report claiming the MACC had listed 37 recommendations to be taken against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in connection with the investigation on SRC International, a former subsidiary of sovereign investment fund 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), saying the allegations “are not true”.
