Immigration officer, wife charged with graft involving RM5,400
MALACCA: An Immigration officer and his
wife were jointly charged at a Sessions Court here Wednesday with four counts
of receiving RM5,400 bribe from a woman two years ago.
Marzuan Sungep, 57, and Norizan Hashim, 41,
pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them before Judge Norma
Ismail.
They allegedly committed the offences at
four separate locations here between 12.30pm on Nov 13, 2014 and 10.30pm on Nov
17, 2014.
The charges framed under Section 16(a)(A)
of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 carries a maximum jail
term of 20 years and a fine not less than five times the amount or value of the
bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher upon conviction.
The bribe was meant for the woman, Helmida
Mukhlis, to get a valid work permit without the need to go to the Immigration
Department office.
Judge Norma fixed June 13 for mention and
set a bail of RM15,000 with two-sureties for each accused. MACC deputy public
prosecutor Ong Cheng Hian prosecuted while both accused were unrepresented.
